Thank you to the Carbon Market Institute for hosting the 10th Carbon Farming Industry Forum in Fremantle, Western Australia. It was fantastic for Salubris to partner with this year’s event and particularly meaningful to see the conference hosted in WA – a state with extraordinary biodiversity assets, unique land tenure arrangements, and enormous potential to help shape the future of Australia’s carbon and nature markets.

During Plenary One, our Executive Director, Brendon Grylls, spoke on “Building the Foundation for Climate, Nature and Regional Prosperity”, highlighting the scale of opportunity across WA’s Crown land estate and the potential for carbon and biodiversity markets to deliver long-term economic and tenure benefits for Traditional Owners and regional communities.

He outlined WA’s unique land tenure landscape and the emerging Diversification Lease pathway as a key mechanism to unlock value across the c.130 million hectares of Crown land opportunity. He noted that while industry and Traditional Owner partners are ready to progress projects, greater certainty and more timely progression through the regulatory and approval processes will be critical to move from concept to reality.

As Brendon stated during the forum:

“The biggest risk to this sector is not the compliance obligations placed on industry – it is the inability of legislators and regulators to provide certainty to the market trying to supply the product.”

A key theme throughout the conference was the importance of Traditional Owner leadership, participation and collaboration in carbon and nature markets.

We were proud to hear Salubris recognised during the “Town Hall: Indigenous Carbon – Country, Culture and Community” discussion for our partnership approach and commitment to working collaboratively with Traditional Owner groups to deliver long-term environmental, social and economic outcomes through genuine partnerships and shared prosperity.

Yesterday, our CEO Peter Balsarini joined Plenary Four: “Carbon and Nature Projects as an Asset Class”, discussing the role of carbon and nature projects within investment markets and the frameworks needed to support project bankability. Peter spoke about the strong demand emerging from the WA market for Nature Repair and biodiversity opportunities, and his excitement for the continued development of the sector.

Throughout the conference it was great connecting with Salubris’ Traditional Owner partners who were in attendance, investors, project developers and industry participants who are helping shape the next phase of Australia’s carbon and nature markets.

Thanks again to CMI and everyone who made the trip to WA – and for the important conversations on how we unlock the next phase of this market.
